Check out the post by StorageEffect here on an experienced storage company: Compellent Technologies, below the abstract.
“… In a nutshell, Storage Center is tiered storage in a box, able to store and migrate data across different classes of storage: 15K rpm FC, 10K rpm FC and 7200 rpm SATA. It all happens without the user having to classify data – the system figures out where data belongs based on how frequently it’s used, and rebalances the data periodically to maintain the right data on the right storage …”

Looking for a performance monitoring, measuring cluster scaling with vmware & benchmarking utility for your VMware environment, check VMark 1.1 here. Their tests with 102 VMs (= 17.000 exchange mailboxes, 35.000 db-transactions, 350Mbps I/O, 30.000 webp/min 17 java middle-tier servers) were very succesfull, they even got to increase the load bij 17% without degrading performance.
This might be an interesting tool for the channel, how often do we not get the question will my server/environment be enough for my load. Citrix has a similar product yet only for testing the load on XenApp servers. if you setup the Xenapp servers in a Xen VM you have more or less the same setup. Yet testing the load on db-level, webpage-level will be difficult.

VMware to Acquire B-hive Networks to Further Enhance Virtualization Platform — VMware announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire B-hive Networks. With this acquisition, VMware will leverage the B-hive team and technology to offer proactive performance management and service level reporting for applications running within VMware virtual machines – on both servers and desktops. In addition, B-hive’s R&D facility and team will form the core of VMware’s new development center in Israel. The terms of the acquisition, which is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2008, subject to customary closing conditions, were not disclosed.
B-hive works in both VMware and Citrix XenServer environments, so I don’t know what will happen to Xen support after the deal closes. This leaves Akorri and Netuitive as potential pickings for Citrix or Microsoft.

It’s no secret that the rapid adoption of data center virtualization, while providing the clear cost savings of server consolidation, creates a much more difficult environment for the management of performance and availability of virtualized applications. While other management vendors tout their ability to capture metrics from virtual environments, their tools still require massive amounts of manual effort to solve performance problems and simply cannot scale in a virtualized environment. Integrien is taking a new approach to virtualization management by automating much of this manual effort in today’s dynamic and complex virtualized environments.
