RDP vs. Provision Networks Multimedia Redirection Technology June 9, 2008

VDI requires a good reaction-rate from the system in order to satisfy the user. ICA is a good solution, but also a lot of other VDI systems work on different protocols such VMware VDI that runs on RDP.
Patrick Rouse has posted a number of videos that compares RDP againt Provision Networks Multimedia Redirection Technology, one important remark is the fact that these videos are based on a LAN-bandwith. This is an important remark as bandwith in the LAN is available without any problem. What about WAN-bandwith or GPRS, HSDPA, UMTS?
Not so long ago there was a video posted on youtube which compared ICA against RDP in a Citrix environment. You can check it here.

I would like to elaborate, that we are still using RDP, but we are delivering the multimedia stream to the client CODEC via OEM RDP Virtual Channel, instead of rendering it with RDP. This is what allows you to get full fidelity playback. The performance over low speed connections is not consistent “yet”, but we’re working on ways to address that. As I posted on our blog, this currently works on machines with Windows Media Player 10 and 11, but will also work on Linux (in the near future).
Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks a lot for the extra information.
Do you believe that the protocol (wether it is ICA, ALP, RDP, …) will have a great influence on the adoption of VDI?
