Once again VMware is confronted with request from the public to make the source code of ESXi (in this case) available to the general public. Especially as the public believes that Hypêr-V is feature-richer than ESXi and ESXi offers some disadvantages on the level of management and other points.
Where will this go? Should VMware make the source code of ESXI freely available to all? After all the big brother ESX remains high priced and more feature-rich? What would the result be, when the source code of ESXi remains closed?

VMware announced the general availability of the VMware Infrastructure (VI) Toolkit (for Windows), a new addition to its scripting toolkit portfolio that enhances automation of virtual datacenters. Offered free of charge, the toolkit is an easy-to-use scripting interface for administrators who need to manage multiple VMware ESX hypervisors or VMware VirtualCenter instances. Based on the popular Microsoft PowerShell scripting language, it provides a familiar interface that lets administrators automate repetitive tasks such as cloning, moving, starting or stopping virtual machines and hosts in a VMware Infrastructure environment.
With the release of VI Tookit, VMware also announces a contest for the best scripts, the goal: encourage the community to exchange scripts. A wonderfull idea, especially with a semi new technology like virtualization. More information on the contest can be found here.

Furthermore complexity is also one of the factors that has an influence. furthermore storage should be understood completely in order to maximise the investment and provide a high performance virtualization solution.
The staff at BytesAndSwitch has released its list with “newbies to watch”, on one there is VKernel on which we posted a while ago. Their flagship product “Chargaback Virtual Appliance” meters how much computing power and stroage the VMs use. full article here.

Edward Haletky posted an article on cio.com, which reflects his toughts on virtualization forensics and virtualization security. Now that we are at the gate of the big virtualization boom, forensics and security become more and more important. Edward has stuck to VMware and clear sends a message to VMW:
“There is a need for better tools and information from VMware to make forensic acquisition and analysis a reality within the virtual infrastructure.”

Personally I am wondering if this reaction of the vendors will depend on their hypervisor solution: open (like KVM, Xen) or closed (like VMware). Furthermore this article also touches the topic of general security, what will happen with the current security vendors active in the phyiscal world, will they adapt their solutions to a virtualized environment or can we expect a new bunch of players looming aroudn the corner?
