As 2009 looms around the corner it is report time, following on our post yester day on Endpoint Virtualization yesterday by Symantec, it is KACE Systems Management who have released their November 2008 analysis of Virtualization in the Mid-Market:

Once again the report contains a lot of intersting ifugres: 76% of mid-size companies have deployed some form of virtualization technologies and 9% are planning to. 64% of the participants have already deployed application virtualization and 82% of all of those who have a virtualization technology on board, report financial savings.

As virtualization remains a technology created by people it has to be maintained by people, it is nice to know that 86% of the participants report that the virtualization technology has had a positive impact on them personally.

When looking at KACE, who are playing in the management part, it is nice to see that 71% of the respondent are in favor of a management tool that both manages physical as virtual servers.

Some nice to knows is that fact that Mid-Market is seen as those with 100-5000 employees and that the study was focussed at Technology Professionals, so not the business people !

XenApp 5 – New feature-list November 18, 2008

More and more we receive the request to give more an indepth view on the features of XenApp 5, we are not that “feature-list-guys” but more the “solution-type-of-people”, but on general request here it comes:

Improvements, changes in “client-side application virtualization” next to the already available features in XenApp 4.5 (XA Enterprise & Platinum)

  • Inter-isolation communication: when streaming an application to a device (f.e. Word) and another in another package (f.e. Exchange), you have the capacity to use Word as email-editor.
  • Differential synchronization: uploading of only the changed files and removing outdated files
  • HTTP and HTTPS streaming of applications
  • ‘Special Folder Redirection’: alloes for automatic redirection of server-side special folders to the client side.  When a user clicks on the Documents folder in their XenApp 5 session, the folder that opens will actually be the local Documents (or My Documents) folder.  When SFR is used, all file operations such as opens and saves will take place in the client-side folder. For those that use multiple devices (for example home PC and business PC) SFR should not be enabled !!! Gabe Knuth has tested the solution in depth.

Improvement, changes in ‘printing’

  • XPS printing is supported
  • Printing localization: the session will automatically detect the closest printer

OpenBench Labs: analysis & report on SANmelody … November 17, 2008

The results:

  • SANmelody consolidates resources and virtualizes storage at the disk-block level: Logical blocks are served from tiered storage pools that can be based on such characteristics as drive performance or data availability.
  • MMC Snap-in provides a unified single-pane-of-glass management for all storage resources: With storage resource management IT’s biggest cost driver, SANmelody provides the means to manage heterogeneous storage resources centrally rather than as isolated devices.
  • HA and DR made practical: IT is no longer constrained to use identical hardware and can mix and match servers and storage at their disposal to assemble a highly-available storage infrastructure that also covers disaster recovery needs.
  • Dynamic virtual disk pools support thin provisioning: SANmelody efficiently automates thin provisioning across an entire SAN by consuming virtual disk blocks only when non-zero data is written by application servers rather than when virtual volumes are assigned.
  • SANmelody caching improves throughput: Running Iometer, SANmelody caching boosted I/O throughput by upwards of 33%.

What is also important are the ROI values for the customer …

  • Consolidate Site-wide Storage Resources for Higher Resource Utilization
  • Lower the Total Cost of Storage Hardware by Eliminating Device-specific Feature License Purchases
  • Centralize and Standardize Site-wide Storage Resource Management via MS MMC
  • Unified SAN Thin Storage Provisioning Only Draws Upon Storage Capacity When Data is Written
  • High Availability Supported with Snapshots and Synchronous Mirroring
  • Disaster Recovery Support with Remote Replication
  • Round-Robin LUN Distribution of Server I/O Traffic Benchmarked at 50,000 IOPS Using 8KB Reads with No I/O Bottlenecks

Report on Endpoint Virtualization … November 17, 2008

Recently Symantec has commissioned a study on ‘Endpoint Virtualization’, finally the document is freely available. It has taken some time but here are the main results:

  • More than a quarter (28 percent) of respondents said at least 40 percent of their organizations’ IT resources are spent on managing operating system and application delivery to endpoint devices
  • 76 percent of respondents said their organizations have implemented some form of endpoint virtualization technology into their IT infrastructures
  • 36 percent of respondents said at least a quarter (26 percent) of their entire 2009 IT budget is earmarked for endpoint virtualization initiatives
  • 52% of those that have enabled endpoint virtualization, do this with Microsoft or Citrix

There are some ’strange’ results, 76% confirm that they are using endpoint virtualization, unfortunately it is completely unclear how this is divided over application virtualization (XenApp, WTS), application streaming (XenApp, ThinApp, App-V), Desktop Virtulization (XenDesktop, MS VDI, VMware VDM) or OS Streaming (Provisioning, …). It would have been nice if this information would also be made available, afterall, Microsoft and Citrix take 52% of the complete share for their account, but is that on XenApp or WTS or App-V or with Citrix Provisioning Server, completely unclear.

Furthermore Symantec pops up with an 8% marketshare (fourth place) after Microsoft, Citrix and VMware. Believing that Symantec has built-up a marketshare of that size in such a short time, only confirms our toughts, a more detailed division is required between:

  • Server side application virtualization (XenApp, WTS)
  • Client side application virtualization (XenApp, App-V, ThinApp, …)
  • Desktop Virtualization
  • OS Streaming

However, the report clearly indicates that virtualization is being adopted in all layers of the infrastructure. Recent studies have shown that approximately 14% of the x86 servers are virtualized according to Citrix.

Citrix has bought the US company Vapps Inc, which provides audio conferencing to SME using VoIP. Citrix has paid 26.6 million USD, there is a possible surplus of 4.4 million USD if cetain financial goals are met.

This acquisition clearly is part of the extension of the Citrix Online services, in which Citrix is more and  more getting into competition with Cisco, who believes that everybody requires Telepresence, while Citrix Online clearly sees more in online conferencing and collaboration services fro SMBs.

Addition 17/11 – 15:16 – A contact from Citrix Online was unable to provide additional info, as everything seems to be under non-disclosure.

Addition 18/11 – 22:41 - In addition to high-quality audio, Vapps brings support for Skype, which Citrix could also add to its GoToMeeting mix. This capability lets Skype users call in to conferences attended by users of traditional phones. Vapps had a previous relationship with Skype in which it helped expand the maximum number of participants that could join a Skype conference call.

Cost effective daily IT management in 9 seconds !!! November 14, 2008

The day to day management of an IT environment in a virtualized environment does not differ much from a physical environment. Yet IT departments tend to spend a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money at executing day-to-day tasks or repetitive tasks when it comes to users and systems.

With the release of RES Wisdom 2009 the time spent can be reduced, the effort can reduced to a minimum and the budget for an IT department can be better allocated to more important tasks than day to day management.

A typical example of a day-to-day job within an IT department is setting up a new user in the Active Directory, creating a homedrive, creating the same user in the Exchange environment and set a number of AD parameters. With RES Wisdom 2009 this can be done in 9 seconds !!!

RES Wisdom 2009 is your ‘Santa’s little helper’, offering you the breathing-space for other more critical tasks when it comes to day to day management of a small, medium or enterprise-sized IT infrastructure.

Wisdom 2009 is not the first release of RES SOFTWARE form the Netherlands, it is the sucessor of WISDOM 2007 with a lot of new features such as provisioning, run books and snapshot intelligence.

Kate Brew interviews Chris Mayers (Principal Security Architect at Citrix) on the aspects of strong authentication. How integration with Citrix WebInterface is possible and what the immediate advantages are. (interview)

An interesting aspect in the interview is ‘biometrics’, we have worked on a lot of projects in which biometrics were against OTPs (like Vasco), almost in 99,5% the OTP security was enough. Chris gives a good view on why this might be the case. It is all about sending biometrical-data from a remote system to the network. Biometrical data has much value to a hacker than OTP values, afterall your fingertip does not change every time you push a button.
