Following our post yesterday on the joint-collaboration between Intel and Citrix on a Type-1 hypervisor, Citrix and Intel have announced project “Independence”, a solution for ‘local virtual desktops’. On the following page there are some demo’s of the solution.

The concept:

Citrix Local Virtual Desktops - Project Independence in collaboration with Intel

Advantages:
  • Bare metal hypervisor with very low overhead
  • Central managed image with central distribution & management of the image (updates, …)
  • Local Virtual Desktop has access to local resources, interesting for 3D & resource intensive applications
  • Offline use of corporate desktop
  • Desktop ownership
  • Buy-Your-Own-Computer reducing investments and TCO when it comes to desktop purchases

Availability:

Expected availability is not completely clear, however a new version of XenDesktop (in which the solution probably will be included) is probably foreseen for next month. I do not believe that this solution will already be included in this new version.

Citrix is working together with Intel on a Type-1 hypervisor, the product is scheduled to be released in 2H2009 in two versions: an open source version to the Xen project and a commercial Citrix product. (more)

Earlybert pointed to us that it is an Type1 hypervisor and not a Type2, he is absolute correct, we have corrected the remark. Thanks Bert.

As already posted on the 4th of december, Cisco is eager to enter the data center server market with ‘project California’. More details arise …

Cisco  has developed a blade server chassis that combines an Intel-based server, a switch and virtualization management capabilities in an integrated system. The project will probably go live in the spring of 2009 and will contain the Nexus 5000 switch (for network and storage), blade servers with Intel Nehalem processors and a virtualization solution.

Depending on the sources, the virtualization layer might be VMware or even RedHat, other sources indicate that California could be OS-agnostic.

Hewlett-Packard, meanwhile, is preparing its own two-in-one system, one that combines a ProLiant server and ProCurve switch, sources say. It’s expected to appear early in 2009. HP recently moved its ProCurve networking arm into its Technology Solutions Group to more closely align those businesses

Virtualisation has become a pillar for implementing greater flexibility, delivering better utilization rates, faster integration of new servers and services and higher availability whilst striving to reduce CAPEX and OPEX costs. In some countries, virtualisation has already become the standard platform for deploying new workloads. As virtualisation has matured and become more pervasive in companies, the effective management of virtual as well as integrated virtual and physical environments will be the focus for the next phase in virtualisation initiatives.

Did you know XenServer leverages the full value of Intel’s newest chipset and completely supports both the 4- and 6-socket editions? With this increased level of support and interoperability,  Citrix is currently conducting additional testing with Xeon and anticipates success in supporting their 8-socket platform in the very near future.

Lou Shipley, filmed onsite at the Citrix office in Bedford, MA, discusses the relationship between Citrix and Intel and the value of Citrix XenServer working with latest Xeon processor. McAfee at its FOCUS 2008 Security Conference announced that it is teaming with industry leaders HP ProCurve, Intel Corporation and VMware Inc. The cooperation is designed to deliver best-in-class security for HP ProCurve networking products, Intel business PC platforms and the VMware platform.

Protecting Macs that run Windows using VMware Fusion is just one of the efforts McAfee and VMware are developing to enhance the security of virtual environments. In September, McAfee unveiled McAfee Total Protection for Virtualization suite, a complete and scalable security solution spanning physical and virtual servers, desktops and networks, optimized for the VMware platform. Earlier this year at VMworld Europe 2008, McAfee was the first security company to adopt and publicly demonstrate VMware VMsafe.

Virtual Service Oriented Grids June 18, 2008

Imagine if you take virtualization, combine it with SOA and add some grid computing … you get ‘virtual service oriented grids’.

With virtualization you can increase the load on your physical server, with SOA yoiu enable the system to be agile and align with the business. When adding grid computing you get the most flexible, adaptive datacenter that responds to the requirements from the business. That is what IT should be about, adapting IT to the business.

Intel will be publishing a book on how ‘Virtual Service Oriented Grids’ will be changing the enterprise. You can find an abstract here. A must read for late summer.

Symantec and Citrix XenServer … [II] June 11, 2008

Roger Klorese just posted an article on the collaboration between Symantec and Citrix Xenserver on the level of storage: Veritas Virtual Infrastructure. Especially that last phrase is interesting …

“As for the future, and how some of Symantec’s capabilities will be available to Citrix’s own XenServer users… watch this space”

Can this be interpretated as … Citrix will OEM some backup functionality?

Addition Channel-V – 13.06.08 ♦  Veritas Virtual Infrastructure brings a number of key storage management capabilities to the Citrix XenServer platform. The system provides a number of tools not available to file-based virtualization systems (such as VMware’s Virtual Machine File Systems), including direct control of block storage from a guest virtual server, mirroring capabilities across heterogeneous arrays, and improved data availability through SAN multi-pathing. Shipments are expected by this fall at a price of $4,595 per two-socket server.

One of the interesting side stories to the VVI platform is the fact that the original XenSource was planning to add Symantec’s storage management to the Xen hypervisor interface before the company was bought out by Citrix. Even though that deal never materialized, Symantec was still eager to take on VMware, and by extension EMC, so it decided to host the Xenserver hypervisor inside the Storage Foundation interface. The combo provides the same management toolset for virtual machines that is available for physical ones.

VMware isn’t sitting still when it comes to storage, however. The company is setting its sights on improving specific functions, such as adding snapshot capability to VMFS to aid online backup and archiving. And new tools like VMotion provide for live migration of disk files from VMs to multiple storage arrays. The goal is to increase the ability to provision new storage with each server refresh to take advantage of the most up-to-date technology.
