Announcing MDOP 2009 … April 2, 2009

MDOP 2009 has been released by Microsoft to SA customers. The 2009 version includes the first release of MED-V, an update to App-V 4.5 and an update to the Asset Inventory Service (AIS). (more)

A quick reminder :

  • MED-V: offers the possibility to run 2 OS on one device: one base OS (f.e. Vista) and one MED-V OS (f.e. XP) so that you can run older applications on a new system  -  Personally I do not see the advantages in running an older OS with specific applications on a new OS because the application is not (f.e.) Vista compatible. This means that you have the base image to maintain, patch & update and that you have to do the same with the virtual OS in de MED-V environment. Bare-Metal Client Hypervisors (like project Independence) are much more interesting as this decouples the OS from the hardware and that offers greater flexibility when it comes to management, maintenance & patching.

  • APP-V 4.5 CU1: application streaming to a desktop with Windows 7 Beta support

During the last getVIRTUAL show in Antwerp last Friday, Arlinda Alves (MSFT) pointed out that both APP-V and MED-V will be part of the MDOP package. To be very honest, after I will I got a little bit confused on differentiating APP-V and MED-V. Above all, it also made me wonder what the financial impact would be of the MDOP-package once it is fully functional (probably after the next major event in Barcelona).

Thanks to Gartner all the confusion washed away and i know have a clear overview of the financial aspects. More here.

The company said development on the newly named App-V 4.5 has been completed and that it will be included in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) 2008 R2 that is set for release in a few weeks.

MDOP includes App-V; Enterprise Desktop Virtualization for managing and deploying virtual PCs; Asset Inventory Service, an inventory scanning tool; System Center Desktop Error Monitoring; Advanced Group Policy Management for change management via group policy objects; and the Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset, which helps in recovering a crashed PC.

MDOP is comprised of software from Microsoft’s purchases of Softricity, Kidaro, AssetMetrix, Winternals Software and DesktopStandard.

App-V 4.5 also introduces Dynamic Suite Composition (DSC), which lets virtualized applications share middleware resources such as a database.

Furthermore changes have been made to the licensing model

More information can be found on the official MDOP-blog.

Since the take-over by Microsoft some things have changed:

  • Pricing model has moved to a user-license model
  • The SoftGrid for Windows Desktop client, was bundled into the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP). Pricing was low, but you have to have a license that is still under SA. The same applies for those wishes to use VECD (VDI)
  • The feature for application publishing and virtualization without streaming was added

The new 4.5 release available somewhere in Q2 or Q3 this year will have the following features:

  • Bye bye Softricity as brand (Microsoft is also trying to move the name Softgrid out of the world)
  • Hello System Center Microsoft Application Virtualization
  • Inter container traffic (Dynamic Suite Composition)
  • A streaming server for the branch-office
  • Changes to VAS and the infrastructure

One thing is very strange, it is almost similar to Citrix.

  • Rebranding, Citrix has also done
  • Inter container traffice, Citrix has also done in Application Streaming
  • Streaming server for the branchoffice: citrix has also done in collaboration with Microsoft: WANscaler branch repeater

You could almost start thinking that Citrix is advising Microsoft what to do with Softricity Softgrid … oeps sorry … System Center Microsoft Application Virtualization.

Furthermore Microsoft recently announced the take-over of Kidaro and the integration of the Kidaro solution into the MDOP in the 1st half of 2009 on which we blogged a while ago.

Microsoft has announced that it has completed the acquisition of Kidaro.  What is interesting is that Microsoft has now confirmed that the technologies acquired from Kidaro will be incorporated into Microsoft’s existing Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) product within the first half of 2009
