- IBM announced yesterday their first move to cloud computing with a SaaS offering for contact management, instant messaging and file sharing program in their own data centers. The fee per user per month will be between 10 USD and 45 USD, general availability of the suite is foreseen for April 7th and it will be marketed under the brand LotusLive Engage (more)
- VMware changes the number of supported virtual CPUs to 20 virtual CPUs per core across a board. The maximum number of vCPU remains unchanges: 192 (ESX) and 170 (ESXi Update 3) (more)

Cisco Project California [Part IV - Unified Computing System] March 17, 2009

So Project California has seen the light (previous post) … yesterday there was a gigantic-buzz across blogs, twitters and the web on Cisco’s UCS … Unified Computing System. A digest of the most important things-to-know …
· The system consists out of Fabric interconnects, Fabric extenders and Blade Servers, which work as 1 big unit within the data center. The Fabric Interconnect holds the “service profiles”, which are frameworks including paramets for power, cooling, network parameters, storage parameters, … These profiles are used for coordination and automation of each layer of the hardware stack (which includes the interconnects, the extenders, the NICs and the blade servers).
· The provisioning of the OS within a virtual machine or a physical blade is not part of the solution, in order to provision these OS and applications, the user will have to work with XML APIs.
· Cisco claims that they can reduce CAPEX with 20% and OPEX with 30%, this is not that surprising. A general automated and consolidated data center can obtain these ratios.
As this is a complete Cisco-centric-solution there are some catches involved:
· In order to maintain uptime it advised to have a cluster of Fabric Interconnects that work in an active/passive mode
· Cisco only supports VMware at present, although that certain reports claim that the solution will also be available for Hyper-V. The Nexus switch is included within the UCS solution but the Nexus works best with VMware
· What about vendor-lock-in?
Other items that have to be seen are:
· Pricing ! General availability of the solution is foreseen for Q2/09.
· The solution is aimed at server virtualization, what about solutions for application virtualization?
· The specifications of the blade servers

Cisco Project California [Part III - the release] February 18, 2009

Cisco has been working on entering the servermarket for over the past months with their project California. The final product will probably be released to the public on March 16th in the States, this news surfaced in the shades of rumours about Cisco taking over EMC or VMware (recently Cisco has increased it capital with 4 billion USD through external financing).
Specs of the new blades servers that surface: include Intel Core i7 processors, 192GB Memory, PCI Express connectivity (providing access to Cisco Unified Fabric Architecture with direct communication between the blades and the storage servers. There will be a tight integration with VMware (Cisco owns around 1,6% of VMware at present), but it remains unclear if the VMware solution would be OEMed in the product

It has been a while since we posted the last ‘virtualization & cloud industry news”, our excuses for this, here are the most important announcements:
Following project Independence of Citrix (a baremetal client hypervisor in collaboration with Intel), VMware released its open source VDI client: VMware View Open Client. VMware hopes to maximize its return by focussing thin client vendors, these thin clients will form an important number of all installed devices according to Gartner. So the battle moves from the server-side to the desktop. (more)
EMC and Microsoft extend their collaboration into 2011 (more)
Following the European Code of Conduct for Data Centers, the Green Grid initiative will be announcing on the 4th plans to develop a new metric for data center productivity and a data center 2.0 design guide.
RNA networks specializing in memory virtualization software (transforming server memory into a shared network resource) announced the launch of its Memory Virtualization Platform (MVP) and first product, RNAmessenger, based on the MVP (more)
The partnership between Xsigo and Dell will result in additional I/O ports on PowerEdge servers on the fly without the need for extra network interface cards, providing increased I/O virtualization. (more)

Tom Valovic posted an interesting article about an interview with Stuart Robinson of Teradici on the purported benefits of Teradici’s PC over IP protocol licensed by VMware. Tom reports on a Teradici claim that PC over IP has a lead over ICA in that it has an ability to dynamically adjust the bandwidth needed by the remoting protocol, in response to available network bandwidth. Specifically, Robinson (who actually knows better) claims that ICA has no such ability.

Last Friday, Microsoft’s latest round of licensing changes were released to the public as two documents:
- “Licensing Windows Server 2008 to Run with Virtualization Technologies“
- “Licensing Microsoft Server Products in Virtual Environments“
There is definitely some good news here. CAL requirements for “indirect access to Windows 2008″ were lifted. So organizations will only need CALs for Windows guest OSs and the applications that run within them. The previous policy impacted customers running Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor and did not affect licensing on any other hypervisor.

Citrix has announced that they’ll be offering an alternative to traditional on-line VDI deployments (ala XenApp) in the form of a client hypervisor (Project Independence, posted yesterday). In essences, a client hypervisor allows a user to run a full-blown virtual machine on their desktop — basically a throw-back to running VMware Workstation/Player in the enterprise before we had all these fancy virtual platforms like Virtual Infrastructure and Hyper-V.
It allows users to work anywhere without concern about having an uplink. On planes, in coffee shops where there’s no Wifi or the connection is too small to reliably delivery a VDI experience. It also paves the way to true application virtualization, where the CPU-based hypervisor can be trimmed down to support running applications directly without the bloated guest operating system.

Tom Henderson and Brendan Allen of Network World Lab Alliance conducted an extensive performance testing of Citrix XenServer 5.0, Novell’s Xen 3.2 and Virtual Iron 4.4. Two other vendors — Sun and Red Hat — were invited to participate but because of varying timing problems, declined to participate.
The testing confirmed that open source Xen is a formidable challenger to the closed code VMware and Microsoft hypervisors. When the performance of business transactions running on top of the hypervisors was measured, Citrix’s XenServer 5.0 was the top finisher in nine out of 12 test runs.
Citrix VMs are tops in transaction processing, Novell’s in I/O speed.

Virtualization.info conducted a research on ‘the state of the sector’ in October last year, they have released the first results on their website:
Seen the number of respondent we must say that it has been an extensive study, approximately there was a 50/50 rule between the US and EMEA. The size of the companies -however- does not always reflect the real world, more than 64% of the respondents was working for a company with more than 1000 users.
One thing was a little bit “surprrising” in the TOP3 of ‘used platforms’ you get VMware, XenServer and Hyper-V, as one would expect. But Hyper-V is way above VMware, which is little strange seen the ‘time’ it has been on the market. Another explanation comes from the size of the companies in the survey.

Sun released earlier this weeks document regarding xVM Server 1.0 and xVM Ops Center 2.0, however they have removed the documents as senior management decided not to release the docs until “General Availability” of the products. VMware has always been in the market as an independent EMC daughter, today EMC steps up the integration and gives the sign to the market, we are the best for VMware. What about other storage vendors? (more)

LinMin introduces bare metal provisioning 5.3 with improved GUI and support for the latest Linux distris.
Sun buys QLayer, Qlayer will be part of the cloud computing unit within Sun. QLayer was one of the driving forces behind CloudCamp Brussels and generated a turnover of around 0,8 million EUR. The company specializes in development of virtual data center software.

EMC bought parts of SourceLabs (and not the complete company as we posted before), those parts will be integrated in EMC’s Cloud Infrastructure Business (which has 2 offerings: one SMB and one for enterprise). SourceLabs will be integrated in the second offering which combines Atmos and Hulk. Channel Register in the UK, however believes that SourceLabs will be integrated in the SMB segment (Decho), which is consumer oriented with a focus on online backup. A spokesman of EMC clearly confirmed that the purchase is aimed at Atmos, which targets automation of management of huge storage volumes across large distances.

Even that we have already rolled to the 3th day of 2009, we wish you and your family the very best for 2009 with a lot of entertainment, pleasure and challenges and all of that in good health.
That we will encounter a lot of challenges in 2009 is more than clear, I am not referring to the (perhaps) worse econocomic climate but to the challenges that all of us will encounter when we look at virtualization, cloud computing, …
In the last weeks of december, the number of prediction lists was enormous, it has taken some time to digest them, but when I take some distance from the content the following trends, … are clear:
- Do more with less and the requirements for green data centers drive virtualization further
- Break out of the thin client as the user experience is not freely available from the data center
- Storage will become virtualiztion-aware
- Orchestration of virtualization across data centers
- Virtualiation focused security solutions become more common
- Management tools increase focus on the virtual data center as well as the physical data center, combining the solution for both worlds into one solution.
- Extension of application virtualization (according to Adam Hawley, Director Product Management, Oracle VM)

As already posted on the 4th of december, Cisco is eager to enter the data center server market with ‘project California’. More details arise …
Cisco has developed a blade server chassis that combines an Intel-based server, a switch and virtualization management capabilities in an integrated system. The project will probably go live in the spring of 2009 and will contain the Nexus 5000 switch (for network and storage), blade servers with Intel Nehalem processors and a virtualization solution.
Depending on the sources, the virtualization layer might be VMware or even RedHat, other sources indicate that California could be OS-agnostic.
Hewlett-Packard, meanwhile, is preparing its own two-in-one system, one that combines a ProLiant server and ProCurve switch, sources say. It’s expected to appear early in 2009. HP recently moved its ProCurve networking arm into its Technology Solutions Group to more closely align those businesses

Apparently each company has to rebrand its products as corporate strategies tend to change in time, Citrix is al well known examples, they moved from MetaFrame to Presentation Server to XenApp. Now VMware got the virus as well, one thing is for sure it will take some time before those old names (that everybody knows) will be replaced by (for example) VMware vCenter Update Manager.

Recently Symantec has commissioned a study on ‘Endpoint Virtualization’, finally the document is freely available. It has taken some time but here are the main results:
- More than a quarter (28 percent) of respondents said at least 40 percent of their organizations’ IT resources are spent on managing operating system and application delivery to endpoint devices
- 76 percent of respondents said their organizations have implemented some form of endpoint virtualization technology into their IT infrastructures
- 36 percent of respondents said at least a quarter (26 percent) of their entire 2009 IT budget is earmarked for endpoint virtualization initiatives
- 52% of those that have enabled endpoint virtualization, do this with Microsoft or Citrix
There are some ’strange’ results, 76% confirm that they are using endpoint virtualization, unfortunately it is completely unclear how this is divided over application virtualization (XenApp, WTS), application streaming (XenApp, ThinApp, App-V), Desktop Virtulization (XenDesktop, MS VDI, VMware VDM) or OS Streaming (Provisioning, …). It would have been nice if this information would also be made available, afterall, Microsoft and Citrix take 52% of the complete share for their account, but is that on XenApp or WTS or App-V or with Citrix Provisioning Server, completely unclear.
Furthermore Symantec pops up with an 8% marketshare (fourth place) after Microsoft, Citrix and VMware. Believing that Symantec has built-up a marketshare of that size in such a short time, only confirms our toughts, a more detailed division is required between:
- Server side application virtualization (XenApp, WTS)
- Client side application virtualization (XenApp, App-V, ThinApp, …)
- Desktop Virtualization
- OS Streaming
However, the report clearly indicates that virtualization is being adopted in all layers of the infrastructure. Recent studies have shown that approximately 14% of the x86 servers are virtualized according to Citrix.

- EMC has taken its Mozy and Pi holdings – Pi being the stealth-mode mystery start-up it bought to acquire ex-Microsoft kingpin Paul Maritz before it fired Diane Greene and put him in charge of VMware – and Mozy being its year-old $76 million online consumer backup acquisition – and put them in a new cloud concern called Decho Corporation. - Windows Azure has been in CTP sinds PDC2008, the solution is still in PDC but available to take the load. Pricing remains a mystery as well as the fact that only .NET applications can be ported to Azure. Furthermore the solution keeps on focussing on developpers, altough that there is information for business use (more).
